I'm sorry Alan but you are wrong.

I've worked on many, many systems using COBOL from MicroFocus, to Burroughs, to NCR to .... More to the point it is part of the ANSI standard.

What is not allowed is to define multiple instances of a field name where it cannot be qualified.

This is fine:

01 playTime1.
05 A Pic X.

01 playTime2.
05 A Pic X.

Move 'X' to A. // This is illegal syntax - the compiler message will indicate that it can't work out which one you mean.

Move 'X' to A of playTime1. // Perfectly legal

Hi Jon
That is probably true in COBOL on Series I (NEVER used it on Series i) - but on many other machines - UNIVAC (showing my age) Boroughs (showing my age again), IBM, Honeywell, UNiSYS - that was a no no

Alan - COBOL permits the same name to be used in multiple places and they can even have different definitions. You just have to qualify the name when you use it. i.e. AccountNo of MyRecord.

Hi Thomas
I came from coding in COBOL, where more than one field with the same
name was a compile error You are correct ANY field with the same name
- a stand-alone filed - a field in another file, when a file is read -
the data in those fields are all populated if they are the same name
and size I have grown into a love hate relationship with this MOST of
the time - it can kill you However - there ARE some times it can be
great

In RPGIV - maybe this is true in free format - if a Data Structure is defined with the exact names and sizes of the fields in a file when the file is read is the data structure automatically loaded?

Personally I have never seen this before.
