Performance of the code at run time? Performance of the programmers and
ability to train newbies?

For run time performance my experience is that there may be a small
performance gain in some programs and a small loss in others. The majority
of the gains are made by making small tweaks to the program. For example a
program using FEOD can be updated to use the more efficient FEOD(N) in RPG
IV. Also changing old inefficient methods of working for new language
capabilities.

Generally though if all you are looking to do is convert and then do
nothing with the code it will not be worth the effort. If you are making
updates and anticipate ongoing maintenance then I would _always_ upgrade
the code to RPG IV unless there was some major reason not to. There are too
many wonderful features in RPG IV that make so many things easier to do
that to not take advantage of it is foolish in my opinion.
