Is there a reason you can't open it (usropn or normal) and then check the
INFDS and only proceed if it is valid, much like you would do with a
pre-open check? Using INFDS to check that information once the file is open
is so much easier.

where the RPGLE is called directly, without the override..
What would be the best method to check to see, prior to performing the OPEN
of my table, that I have a override set (and I guess, the object in QTEMP)?
