I sorry that this doesn't actually help you, but I think I can say
that it is not Microsoft forcing this change. I connect to MS Active
Directory using LDAP from both the IBM i and from an IBM mainframe and
neither one of them are using SSL. In fact, I asked our network folks
that very question and was told "no."
