I ended up using the EXTNAME with EXTFLD, although the accompanying parameter on the
EXTFLD looked a bit counterintuitive to me (it worked fine). I had tried earlier to use EXTFLD, but due to an error on the EXTNAME statement, the errors I was getting on the EXTFLD's were misleading me. All's well now. Thanks!
