My favourite is: reading in a subprocedure returning a boolean. Then it
looks like:

dow readSomething();
... doSomething();
enddo;

This is the way I do it, too (with parameters). Can do more error
checking/handling (in the sub/service procedure) while keeping he main
flow of the code clean and easy to follow.
