Pete:

While I appreciate the fact that the COMMON Board might be interested in the IBM i content, there is far more out on DeveloperWorks than IBM i. Much of that content bleeds over in to the IBM i space due to the intersection of the POWER platform. So COMMON would need to take all the technologies that run on POWER as opposed to just the IBM i and/or open source content.

The larger problem as I see it is no matter where it's hosted, the IBM folks will not have nearly the freedom to post things they do today. Today the legal and other departments can control all the content, all the time. When/if it moves to a third party they will loose that control. The normal response from them would be to stop IBM'rs from posting anything meaningful at all. A corollary to that is to control who is able to post and how it is moderated. That's not a small job. Does COMMON have the wherewithal to pull that off?

The decision to drop DeveloperWorks is a galactically stupid move and the best way to really hack off your best customers.

As an FYI. This post was timely in that the Common Board was in an all day meeting and I mentioned that perhaps this was an opportunity for Common to be the new home for the Power/IBMi related content. We are reaching out to IBM to see if we can do more than just crawl and reformat the site. We can hope that they can do some work to get us the content in a usable form.

We were successful in the past in taking over the RPG certification exams so maybe there is some precedent in a "hand over". Other ideas: Take the "Mechanical Turk" approach to move content to Common forums. Crawl and Reformat. Open to and working on other ways to SaveDeveloperWorks for the IBM i community.
