It depends upon your perspective. I'm not arguing with your
definition. I agree that from a business standpoint the identity key is a
surrogate for the key which makes sense to the business -- such as a
customer number. But, from a database standpoint, the customer number is
a surrogate for the identity key because the identity key cannot be
changed without deleting and re-adding the row. A surrogate can be
changed. A primary key cannot. I also agree that you're not likely to
change a customer number from a business standpoint -- but you could. From
a database standpoint, the fact that you *can* change the customer number
makes it a surrogate of the primary key.
