Interesting. So SYSTOOLS.SPLIT splits a field into a result set with an entry per row. That could be a useful workaround, assuming to performs well.

fields (eg. a .CSV file). In fact, the old SCAN Op-code was capable of
this. When IBM implemented the %SCAN BIF this was omitted. In fact, I

programming language has just a instruction with the same name (SPLIT) as his suggestion.
