As an alternative to RLA op codes, we switched to RLA procedures, which are
wrappers around I/O functions exported from service program QC2IO, which
offer a dynamic syntax. We have a procedure named rlaColGet() that returns
the value of any field, in any file, given a file name, field name, and key
value. Hence:

field2_name = rlaColGet(file1_name : field1_name : key1_value);
field2_value = rlaColGet(file2_name : field2_name : key2_value);

Then, you can use field2_value in calculations.

Good Day,

Perhaps a silly question and an obvious answer, but I seem to have a bit
of fog about it.

What is the best way to translate a field that contains the name of
another field to be able to reference the second field. Other than do a
bunch of compares.

DCL-S Field1 char(8) INZ('FIELD2')

To be able to use FIELD2 in calculations. FIELD2 is an actual field in a
record, but I only have the literal name of the field.
