Java System.out and System.err

I've been using the code provided by IBM to set the environment variables to initialize Java output (CHECKSTDIO) and am setting the environment variable to direct the output to job-specific folders. The log files are being created beautifully, but are ALWAYS empty! System.out and System.err are DEFINITELY being written to by the application (I even wrote a dummy application which only does this), but the newly created files resolutely remain empty.

The QIBM_RPG_JAVA_PROPERTIES environment variable is being specified at Job level and does not exist at System level.

Any clues? What am I missing?
