Mark,

You are certainly correct, I did take advantage of the C runtime APIs
though my CPPs and main drivers were all RPG. It was based on access to the
null byte map associated with each record, just need to dig out the details
as it's just been too long.

Hi, Bruce:

I seem to recall that your CLF product used the _ROpen, _RRead, _RWrite,
_RUpdate, _RClose, etc. APIs, and not "program described" files in the RPG
sense of the word?
All the best,

No promises, but I know my CLF product of years ago supported NULL fields
even though using run-time program described files. I'll try to figure out
how I did that way back when...

Looks like my utility will never work on NULL capable fields.

Database Null Value Support
Note: For a program-described file, a null value in the record always
causes a data
mapping error, regardless of the value specified on the ALWNULL
keyword.
---- end snip ----

Perhaps I can read the mapping error *DIAG messages and infer that the
columns are NULL. The question is whether the rest of the columns will
get populated or not. Time is so dear right now...
