Thank you for that information, and thank you to everyone else who responded to my question. I did not know that the Optimizer changes the plans based on those factors. That could explain the issue. Is that documented anywhere that you know of in an IBM manual?

I looked at the Index Advisor and that file does have quite a bit of 'advisement' for that file on just those fields, so I bet that is why, when the system is doing a lot of work, that the job runs slowly. I'll see if I can build that index and watch the run time.
