Finally solved this issue with DDS's Keyword LINE.

It's the most simple solution. We consider OVL, PAGSEG, even a third
software.

I did something like that 20 years... ago.
the trick was to have on each page at a fixed position a 8 characters
field.
Each character could be blank or | . the value was set up by the
program... depending on it was the first, next, last page, etc...
on the last page of the spooled file the field contained '________'

this was later implemented in a software product that could rework an
existing spooled file or even merge more spooled files to insert the OMR.
