You sure that is still true Alan? Back in the S/38 and early AS/400 days there was hardware support for packed operations - but I don't think that is true of the Risk machines. Larry, Jim or Mark (among others) might know.

It's true again. It might not be true for OPM RPG, but it's true for ILE RPG.

Zoned variables can't be used directly in the generated code for ILE programs. They always have to be converted to/from packed before they're used for calculations.
