The file's rows do not, nor will they have, any field or combination of fields that is guaranteed unique.  Yet I have a need to update/delete specific rows.  rrn(FILENAME) seems to me the best/easiest way to make it all work.

There will be rows added, and I would like to report the new rrn() on the user's screen.

An identity column v. rrn() is a political discussion that takes place well above my pay grade.

I am inserting a new row into the file. It seems likely that the new RRN is

it.
Are you thinking of IDENTITY_VAL_LOCAL() ?

That won't return the RRN, but I have to ask... what use is the RRN?
