Implementing masking either via RCAC or encryption fieldproc

Has anyone any experience implementing masking in a db2 rpg/sql shop?

Whether the masking is produced by either RCAC or fieldproc, if you have real life hands on experience dealing with this I'd very much appreciate discussing some of the major implications you had to overcome and what strategies were considered and/or used within the application layer itself when that returned masked value was further used for anything other than display purposes.
