Thanks for the heads up on the identity column. What you are saying is
that an RPG write does NOT do an "OVERRIDING SYSTEM VALUE" clause as per
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/sqlp/rbafyinsertidentity.htm
but instead it does an "OVERRIDING USER VALUE"?

I think there might be a difference between "GENERATED ALWAYS" and a
"GENERATED BY DEFAULT".
