RPGSQL update one column of a field. -- RPG400-L

I expect I am making a simple task way too complicated. There is a 100 character field in a record. I wish to update the existing data by overlaying an asterisk ( * ) onto column 100

Something like ... set fieldA = substr(fieldA: 100) = "*" ...
