That aside, RPG in general doesn't talk to PC-attached devices like
keyboard wedges, barcode scanners, and such. Those things generally
pretend to be a keyboard, and thus, as you scan/swipe, the characters go
into whatever field the cursor is positioned at.

The exception to 'in general' are devices that are TCP/IP attached. If
your reader is a very intelligent gadget, and has an IP address, it
might have a web service running in it that allows anyone to connect
that way.
