This works. Of course you would remove the hard coding with parameter
markers in your application

insert into ordline
values(
2, /* order number */
(select ifnull(max(orderline), 0) + 1 from ordline where ordernumber = 2),
/* order line */
7, /* item number */
200 /* qty */
);

So it would look something like
stmt = "insert into ordline values(?, " +
"(select ifnull(max(orderline), 0) + 1 from ordline where ordernumber = "
+
"?), ?, ?)";

execsql prepare insertstatement using :stmt;
...
execsql execute insertstatement using :Ordernumber, :Ordernumber,
:itemnumber, :orderquantity;
and, yes, I did mean to say ordernumber twice.
