To be clear, I haven't got the debug Java working yet, either, but I
suspect my problem is with firewalls, etc. (no connection from the i to
port 8000 on my local pc), and I am working to sort that through the proper
channels.

However picking the project was easy for me because I use RDi to maintain
the Java that runs on our IBM i and the project was already available.

Justin, where is your IBM i Java stored/maintained? You need to import an
existing java project that points to the root folder of that source. (In my
case, on the IFS.)

That looks like a goldmine, but it hasn't panned out for me yet. :p

For the debug configuration, I'm not clear on what the Project is supposed
to be. I clicked the browse but only got a "Project Selection" dialogue
with everything disabled except the Cancel button. Also, on Connection
Properties I've got a Host that defaults to localhost.

RDi 9.5.1.2

It can be done although not using the ILE debugger and not particularly
straightforward.

See this wiki: https://wiki.midrange.com/index.php/Remote_Debug_of_
Java_using_RDi

Good luck
