New to RPG

My name is Brent and I was recently hired by a wholesale distribution
company as a computer programmer. I am a recently graduated software
development student and RPG was not a language covered in my curriculum.

I have been searching and searching for any training materials or
tutorials
in RPG and have found little to no information available. I purchased
Jim
Buck's textbook *Programming in RPG IV, Fourth Edition*. This book is
helpful to a point. But, I feel without a classroom structure as a
companion, I am very limited in what learning I can accomplish.

Having said all of that, do you know of anywhere I can learn RPG IV in
an
RDi environment?
If this is not the place for this type of question, I apologize. I'm
kind
of running out of enthusiasm for RPG...

Thanks,

Brent

Brent,

Welcome to the family! You'll be amazed at how helpful the "IBM i"
community is.

Lots of great resources in previous replies. Just to add one to the list I
would look at Dan Riehl's training at: http://www.400school.com/ He does
training over the Internet which can eliminate travel expenses, but the
training is highly praised.

You've already found a great resource in this mailing list. You might also
check out other midrange.com mailing lists, too.

Several others have suggested checking out COMMON (www.common.org). The
conferences are a great way to learn about the system, study topics, and
make great contacts. I've been amazed at how willing folks at the
conferences are to give out their contact information and to help anyone
out. That's part of why I called it a family above.

It can seem overwhelming at times, but don't despair, reach out to any
resources you can find. There's always help available in the "IBM i"
community. (You'll notice I put "IBM i" in quotes, I do that because it
will help narrow any Internet searches to relevant topics.

Best wishes for the beginning of your career.
