I guess it must have been time for this to come around again. I’ve known that data area operations are slower than database operations for roughly 30 years – yes, since the S/38. I vaguely remember reading an explanation of why in one of the magazines back then, probably News/34-38. Unfortunately I no longer remember the details, other than that it’s mainly due to the way data areas are implemented in the OS, not so much the compilers.
In any event, although you folks discussing it may find it novel, it isn’t exactly a new discovery. Data areas have always been slower than database, and there’s no reason to expect that to change.
