I take it you want to be able to distinguish between zero and blank?

The only solution I can think of is to convert it to a character field and validate for numeric or blank. Suggestions?

Seems kind of clunky and low-tech, but that is all that comes to my
mind too. I think the "digits-only character" edit code might allow
blanks.
