That will not validate the file though Birgitta because there is no way to associate the schema with the file. If indeed schema validation is what is required. The OP didn't specify.
For me it was clear that an XML-SAX will not "Validate" an XML document (against a schema). I thought about programmatically checking the XML document.

Even XML-SAX will not work if the XML is malformed I suspect - I think it will juts error out.

I have seen people use Java based validators, and there are I think some web services that validate XML - whether the content of the XML permit the company to send out like that is another issue.

If the OP would tell us if he means "validate" in the conventional XML sense or whether he has something else in mind it would help. For sure if we are dealing here with V5R4 then SQL is out of the picture.
