I don't use POI myself, but they *say* they are careful to preserve as
much of existing workbooks as possible upon read. So another approach
to explore is to NOT build your workbook from scratch, but to start
with a workbook that was saved by Excel and modify it to suit your
needs. Unless POI screws it up, the resulting file ought to have
whatever flags Excel wants already set properly.
