Nice find! I was just about to write a commiseratory, defeatist response.

I am still a little skeptical about its effectiveness (you know what
they say about things that seem too good to be true), since it doesn't
appear *anywhere* in our code, despite being available for ages (I see
it in the V5R2 manual, for example).

I mean, even if it works, there is the possibility that users will
complain, since any change whatsoever has the potential to rankle
somebody.

But it's totally worth a try! I even have a particular field in mind
on our system that is notoriously susceptible to this kind of input
error to put VALNUM through its paces....
