First of all, thanks to all for the help with this and other SQL issues you've helped me with as I struggled with reaching the Advanced Novice stage with SQL.

Secondly, identity_val_local() worked a charm.

Lastly, I have to admit that I am impressed with SQL's ease and strength. I wrote a 500-line subfile program with 5 columns of data, sortable on any column by clicking any column heading. Clicking that column again sorts in the opposite direction. What makes sorting a subfile useful with large data files is that each column also allows wildcard searches so that subfile sizes can quickly be sized to 200-300 chosen records.
