I know a lot of folks are still on an old release, but how many
are using SEU with v7.1 or v7.2? There are a lot of new features

SEU to provide even the minimal assistance it has in the past.

Completely agree with Dan. If anything, I would say that the
sunsetting of V5R4 has at least pushed some number of reluctant shops
to 7.1. We were in that category (on V5R2 until frighteningly
recently).

But that does almost nothing to push people away from SEU, or toward
RPG features that are specific to 7.1+. It takes a while for folks to
change their coding habits, even if they are open to the idea. Folks
who have only recently moved to 7.1 haven't much chance to practice
using the new features (if they are aware of them at all).

And, no matter how many RDi users say the extra cost is small compared
to the productivity gain, the fact is that it's still an extra cost,
and for a lot of shops, it's not an insignificant cost.

I've been gently warning folks here (a v7r1 shop) that I won't hesitate to
use new features that will trigger syntax errors in SEU.

I think you're justified in doing so, especially since SEU will only
complain if someone tries to edit the affected lines.

It may sound subversive to say this, but I think one viable strategy
to move things forward, indeed the only viable strategy in some shops,
is to just start using new technology on your own. At some point, if
you've done a good enough job with it, the rest of the shop will
simply have to adapt to it. Obviously you have to be aware of your
surroundings. This could be a recipe to shorten your employment or,
at minimum, increase the "technological debt", if you've read the
situation wrong.
