You don't have to remove the file level spec, you can override it at field level:

A CHGINPDFT
A 88 DSPATR(PR)
A N88 DSPATR(HI UL)

By specifying "CHGINPDFT (HI UL)" at the file level, any subfile field
where I set DSPATR(PR) was displayed to the user underlined and
highlighted, which made the protected field appear like any other
updatable field.

Confusing and not at all what users need.

My fix was to remove the file-level CHGINPDFT (HI UL) spec and control
display attributes at the field level with the following:

A 88 DSPATR(PR)
A N88 DSPATR(HI UL)
