Funny you should say that, because my experience went in the other
direction: I had to get to a certain level of Java mastery before OOP
made sense to me.

At least in part, this is because Java provided a concrete
implementation of OOP (rather than just academic jargon).

I will say that making the most of Java probably does require being
able to think in an OOP style, but there's no rule that you have to.
Just as there's no rule that says you have to be fluent in service
programs and activation groups before you can start benefiting from
RPG IV.
