James Lampert: I wholeheartedly agree with learning the cycle. But I disagree with your assessment of the level break logic. Knowing how to use the level break logic inherent in RPG allows me to be a more productive developer since I do not have to write code to tell the system how to know when a field has changed. I have seen some programs that do not properly handle level breaks, page breaks, etc., because the code to perform the level break logic is slightly incorrect. Converting those to the cycle and using L1 indicators for the level breaks allows me to disable code that is not functioning properly, and let the machine take care of recognizing when the data in fields change.

Although many shops have development standards that do not allow the cycle to be used at all, I still think the cycle is the best kept secret in RPG!!! And yes, you can still have an ILE RPG program use the cycle. THANK YOU BARBARA MORRIS!!!!!!!!!
