I had already invested some time going down a similar path so your comments ended up providing me with the formula I needed.

For anyone following along at home, I:

Received the hex number in as a text string.
Converted it to binary using 'cvtch'
Used a data structure where the binary returned value was overlaid with an integer field to get the integer value.
Used the formula below to arrive at the actual date in question.

Thanks again for all the thoughtful comments and help from everyone on the list.

No, it doesn't. Today (2014-11-24) is only day 735561, when counting
0001-01-01 as day 1.

But you can use the same technique, just with the proper offset.

date = d'0001-01-01' + %days(n - 1721426)

where n is the input integer.

Birgitta's SQL-based solution is the nicest, if you're willing to do
embedded SQL.
