How to reliably determine total pages

Sorry if this was confusing. Let me try to clarify:

- The header page always prints just one detail item
- Each detail item is comprised of multiple lines, and that number of
lines can vary
- I don't know why the code subtracts the extra 1. I don't think it
should either, TBH
- It's sometimes 1 page high and sometimes 1 page low
- I've done it without the extra subtraction and it really produces the
same result, sometimes working and sometimes not
- I'm not really sure if I can post actual code since it's a third-party
vendor's program that I'm modifying
