I've done recursion in interpretive BASIC.

The trick to doing recursion without automatic dynamic local variables is to simulate them with arrays. Or to be entirely tail-recursive.

As anybody who's worked in (Lisp) knows, well-coded recursion has the advantage that things happen exactly as many times as necessary, without having to know how many times that might be.
