Hi Vern,

I used the solution you suggested: using the POS keyword on the two fields that had OVERLAY.

But the result was not as expected. Both subfields returned the same value.

Peter

Your original example of fixed-form showed the overlays over a subfield
- I would have thought you could simply do that in free-form - but you didn't show us what you tried that did not work.

As I mentioned in my reply, and you mention here, OVERLAY can't be used with the DS - the new POS keyword takes care of that.

I for one am interested in the attempt that did not work - it could be instructive to us all.

Vern

Hi Birgitta,

That seems to work indeed, although I needed to correct SclLen to int(5).

I thought the overlay keyword was not allowed in free-format.

Apparently you cannot use the datastructure itself on the overlay, but a subfield is allowed.

Thanks!

Try:

DCL-DS DPA_Template_T;
SclTyp Char(1);
SclLen Int(3);
DecPos Int(3) Overlay( SclLen: 1 );
DecLen Int(3) Overlay( SclLen: 2 );
Rsv Int(10) Inz(0);
END-DS;

Betreff: Free-format question

Hi group,

I've been busy converting a program with D-specs to full free-format, but I've encountered an issue which I cannot seem to solve.

Does anybody know how to convert this DS into a Decl-ds structure?

D DPA_Template_T Ds
D SclTyp 1a
D SclLen 5i 0
D DecPos 3i 0 Overlay( SclLen: 1 )
D DecLen 3i 0 Overlay( SclLen: 2 )
D Rsv 10i 0 Inz

The overlay of the subfield is giving me headaches.

Thanks in advance.
