Re: Parsing an XML-XLSX file using XML-INTO

Sounds to me as if you are going to have to resort to using XML-SAX. I could make it work with XML-INTO but the structures are huge and if you only need some of them ...

Don't bother writing a scanner yourself when XML-INTO will do it for you. You could also use Scott Klement's port of eXpat but I find XML-SAX more than good enough.

Any parser will return empty elements if they are present. The way you have it coded right now you will only process the data for the first Worksheet. If you want/need to process more then the worksheet has to become your bottom level repeating element. So you would adjust your path to make Worksheet the final element in the path. Then adjust the DS you are using so that you do XML-INTO worksheet.

You would almost certainly have to use %Handler (and specify Dim(1) to handle just one worksheet at a time) given the sheer size of the data you are processing..

On the subject, if I XML-INTO just one variable (DS) like "Row", and of course this data structure array will not be able to contain it, will a loop using the same thing get the next data?

No. XML-INTO can only process in "pieces" by using %Handler. And that has to be done at the top repeat level - which now appears to be Worksheet.

Also, what about just using one loop through Worksheet/Row to get whole rows in one text field, and then feeding it to XML-INTO again to parse the rest?

Nice thought but won't work in this case. If the XML was designed to contain XML as part of its payload (e.g. as in a SOAP document) then it would be doable. But this is just one honking great XML file - not designed that way. Have you considered asking the users to save as XML on a worksheet by worksheet basis and then process the 3 (?) sheet files you actually want?

I'll post some of the relevant XML, but note that in one of the smaller files this program will deal with has 571,031 lines. Kid you not.

First message I got said it countpfx was not valid for XML-INTO
(hunh???)

RNX0352: Option 'countpfx=Count' is not valid for XML-INTO; reason code 2;
Cause . . . . . : An RPG procedure attempted to use an option string
containing option 'countpfx=Count' which is not valid in the context of the
XML-INTO operation. The reason code is 2. The full option string is
"countpfx=Count path=Workbook/Worksheet/Table/Row doc=file datasubf=Data
ns=remove case=any trim=all allowextra=yes".
2. The option is not valid in the context of XML-INTO.

So I took out the countpfx= option and the count fields (except for rowcount in the PSDS).
Next was that there were missing elements in the XML.

RNX0353: The XML document does not match the RPG variable; reason
code 4.
Cause . . . . . : While parsing an XML document, the parser found that the
XML document does not correspond to RPG variable "row" and the options do
not allow for this. The reason code is 4. The exact subfield for which the
error was detected is "row(1).cell(2).data". The options are

case=any trim=all allowextra=yes". The XML document name is

allowextra is probably needed - particularly if you don't care about the Type fields. allowmissing was not needed because I supplied a count variable (countprefix) wherever it was needed (rows and cells) which as you will see also simplifies the processing.

By using both you basically guaranteed that any valid XML document would process without error no matter what it contained.

2) ns=remove option needed as namespaces are present and need to be stripped out.

I'm first testing to make sure I'm getting what I should.

So in the code I'm using a short field to use with DSPLY for the first 25 bytes of a couple of elements in the code.



Like this:
