Henrik mentioned adding a trigger - you did not address that - in fact,

I hesitate to interject, but there is a consideration that should be
noted. A trigger program cannot be added, changed or removed unless one
can get a *EXCL lock on the file. I always use a trigger mediator
program (like Alan Campin's).

Newcomers to triggers might get frustrated at finding that they can't
change their trigger program during the day.

I do challenge the idea that journaling can't be done - - the trigger
idea is basically doing what journaling does - this does not require
that you start using commitment control - all you need is the before
image, I think, on a write. Of course, you would probably need to keep
the journal receivers around perpetually, to keep the history - this
suggests some kind of compression of journal entries in which you have
no interest.

I very much agree with this. In fact, the compression Vern mentions
could be as simple as going through the journal entries and storing the
key and timestamp the row was changed. Then delete the journal receiver.

I understand that your particular machine might be old and heavily
loaded. This might make one hesitant to try journalling, but have you
actually tried it to measure the actual impact? Political objections
are everywhere; perhaps you can ask for permission to try journalling
for an hour...
