I don't think anyone answered your question.
Specifically, if you create a program with a main routine you need to
specify LR if you do not have a RETURN specified.
Do you have the return op code anywhere in the program, but the code is just
not being executed?

Sure, but the OP said his program didn't STOP. To me, that means it did not
even return. If he's using "didn't stop" to mean something else, I'm sure
he'll let us know. Also, he was surprised it compiled at all.
