Consider having files just for the purpose of defining data structures. We do this, especially in the case where two programs need the same definition. We have RPG and Javascript that use the same file definition for interpreting the data passed back and forth. The file is just for this interface definition.

Maybe consider datastructure(s) based on a file(s), then there could be a way to do some of what you want on iSeries.

I considered this, but it bothers me to link any datastructure to a physical file.
