IF THEN ELSE is among the clasical exaples of code that can be ambiguous.
One way to avoid the problem is to allow only one statement (or composite stetement) for echa branch, another way is to define an endind tag, like fi or endif

For the same reason you can't place the semicolon at the beginning of the following line: the implementation of the parser is made by a bloody beginner. The "free" format stuff is simply put on to one in a sort of fixed format.
