As to "leave things alone" - see my reply to Scott - it seems an author on developerworks sees it very like I do, although he may have some unstated assumptions.

What is your understanding of "leave things alone"? My understanding is that CDATA may be used to include additional XML tags that should NOT be parsed:

<![CDATA[<custno>008_XY 00020001</custno>]]>

But in your example:

<custno><![CDATA[008_XY 00020001]]></custno>


There are no additional XML tags within your CDATA[...] structure; just data with spaces. Why include a CDATA[] structure at all? I doubt that any parser would be concerned with spaces within XML element values.

Test it, I guess ...
