Recursion depth limits are good.

Crashing a multi-user system for lack of one is bad.

Whenever possible, it is good to make recursive routines tail-recursive. In such cases, they can even be optimized to *not* require a new stack frame for each invocation, but re-initialize and re-use the existing one.

I even did recursion once in TRS-80 Level II BASIC. Pain in the butt when you have to implement your own stack in a language without local variables, but it can be done.
