Scott, I think that what you're describing is probably what the OP actually _wants_, which is to pass the data to the called program.

File parameters are intended for a different purpose than passing around the data from one or more record.

Here's an article I wrote about file parameters. At the beginning, it lists some of the reasons you might want to pass a file as a parameter to another program.
