I thought about that, but didn't pursue it because it turns out they don't need that information.

I totally agree about the real solution; unfortunately, they're moving off the IBM i, so no hope of that happening.

But it's all good to know for future use.

I know I published something that was even more directly related to this but I can't find it. The basic idea is to use XML-INTO to grab the "bulk" of the data and then use XML-SAX to parse the document this time picking up the field(s) you had to omit during the XML-INTO parse.

But of course the "real" solution is to move to a supported release <grin>
