As far as I can tell, MIME encoding doubles the actual size (number of bytes transmitted).

Compression of large attachments is easy, and helps quite a bit, but it's just a workaround. Use a better tool for delivery... I like to park the attachment on a server, then send them a link to their file.

Just did I quick test with Aaron's RPGMail utility and a large attachment
and got an error when trying to send it, just like you.

JAVAMail (on which RPGMail is based) has supposedly no limitations
regarding the attachment size, so I suppose this could be a limitation of
the implementation in the IBM i

Also tried to send the same email using MMAIL's routines. Did not received
any error, but at the same time the test email did not appear at its
destination. It could have been a problem with our server, though.
