There are 3 machines, DEV, QA and PRD. Compiling from source on each
works.
Strangely restoring from QA to PRD works but restoring from DEV to
PRD produces the SQL error.
Perhaps there's something about the SQL runtime environment on PRD
that is different on DEV and which is connected to the program via
the SQL pre-compiler.

Well normally I would first chide the OP about failing to give the context of the error messages [spooled joblog with header or including at least the release level], and then await that information before replying. But over years I have learned to accept that doing so seems to have nearly as little value as starting a conversation with a wall, so I will just give the most probable answer :-Q

Get the PTF for the OS database query component for which that OS code improperly references a pointer which has not been set in the effectively same scenario\environment. Searching Google for tokens "msgmch3601" "t/QQQITEMP" "read trigger" yielded the APAR SE47793 [with what I consider a corrected symptom kwd string, and with only relevant data:] MSGMCH3601 T/QQQITEMP TM/QQQITEMP TP/ITEMP STMT/10641 SELECT
