If you go the %SCAN route, you will probably be best served looking
for the name of your variable as well as the equals sign (so look for
'L=' rather than 'L'). This is particularly important if the
variables can appear in any order in the input. (You wouldn't want to
find the 'L' in 'LS' just because 'LS' came first.) Instead of going
to some "maximum length of a value", I would then scan for the *next*
equals sign (if there are no more equals signs, then you know it's to
the end of the string).
