Sadly no Pete - ad it wouldn't help much if there were as the command line is surfaced at various points.

The environment variable and possibly the command exit program mentioned by Brian and others is probably the "correct" approach. Now I just have to determine the relative costs of the "correct" solution vs a less comprehensive but simpler option.

The whole thing is complicated by the fact that a major rewrite is planned anyway ...

Thanks to everybody for the various suggestions - it has been an interesting (if frustrating) experience.
